The Board of UC Regents met at UCLA on September 26 and 27. UCSA President Siegel Singh provided remarks on Thursday about UCSA’s priorities for the year, introduced UCSA campaigns, and discussed the importance of relationship building between the state, students, and UC staff. Every UC Regent was in attendance.

The following highlights from this meeting are:

AFSCME 3299 members provided public comment about their contract negotiations & held an action outside of the Luskin Conference Center joined with students.

The Academic and Student Affairs Committee discussed the issue of repatriation of human remains that are held at UC campuses. UCSA’s position was to move this discussion item into a voting item where the committee votes to return native remains to its rightful owners/tribal communities. Vice Chair Regent Pérez, who also chairs the Academic and Student Affairs committee, vocalized that this issue important and personal as he can trace where his Mexican ancestors are buried. This item remained a discussion item and the committee vowed to work along with tribal communities on this issue.*

The Academic and Student Affairs committee also had a discussion item on Faculty Diversity Outcomes. UCSA’s position was to have Regents to be vocal and comment that that yielding more diverse faculty is a priority. Regent Ortiz Oakley was very vocal about need to recruit and retain faculty that reflect the state’s demographics.*

The Public Engagement and Development Committee discussed their Sacramento advocacy plan. UCSA’s position was to ensure that the committee mentioned joint lobbying with students and to support our legislative priorities. Regent Ortiz Oakley echoed our sentiments.*

The Compliance and Audit committee had a discussion item about an updated response from the Academic Senate regarding the state audit of sexual violence and sexual harassment cases. UCSA’s position was that the committee make solid recommendations following up on the audit. Regent Pérez asked for clarification of the appeal process.

As Executive Director, Salih leads our staff team and organizational strategy, keeps the UCSA office in operation, supports the Board and other student leaders, and fundraises to maximize the potential of our organization. Salih also oversees planning for UCSA’s annual statewide conferences.

 

Raised in Oakland, California, Salih Muhammad strives to embody the principles of service, sacrifice, and selflessness. For much of his life, he has been committed to living toward the liberation of Black people, at home and abroad.

 

In 2009, he continued the pursuit of knowledge at the University of California, Berkeley, where he excelled as a Black student and organizer on campus. His favorite quote is from Franz Fanon, who stated, “Each generation must discover its mission, fulfill it or betray it, in relative opacity.”
