If you are accepted into this program, you will intern, take academic courses, network and participate in professional development activities in Sacramento for the term. The University of California Student Association (UCSA) is a coalition of student governments from across the UC system. UCSA is student-run and student-led, with all staff ultimately accountable to student leadership. Our work centers on educating and organizing students around higher education issues and empowering them to advocate for the accessibility, affordability, and quality of the University of California.

About Our Advocacy Work

UCSA advances student advocacy through organizing, education, participation in UC governance, and state and federal policy engagement. Each year, UCSA leads multiple campaigns round a range of issues impacting undergraduate students, including sexual violence prevention, basic needs and housing security, mental health access, and educational pathways for formerly incarcerated students.

Our advocacy includes quarterly meetings with the UC Office of the President, participation in UC Regents meetings, selection and support of student representatives across a number of boards and committees, and ongoing engagement with campus administrators. UCSA also influences public policy through voter registration and civic engagement efforts, legislative testimony, and annual statewide conferences. This multifaceted approach requires staff who are committed to collaboration, movement-building, and supporting student leadership.

As Executive Director, Salih leads our staff team and organizational strategy, keeps the UCSA office in operation, supports the Board and other student leaders, and fundraises to maximize the potential of our organization. Salih also oversees planning for UCSA’s annual statewide conferences.

 

Raised in Oakland, California, Salih Muhammad strives to embody the principles of service, sacrifice, and selflessness. For much of his life, he has been committed to living toward the liberation of Black people, at home and abroad.

 

In 2009, he continued the pursuit of knowledge at the University of California, Berkeley, where he excelled as a Black student and organizer on campus. His favorite quote is from Franz Fanon, who stated, “Each generation must discover its mission, fulfill it or betray it, in relative opacity.”
